Choose a Niche You Can Win: A Scoring Method

Score your shortlist on frequency, cost, access, and data reality, then test the winner in a week without building anything.

Why narrow beats broad in year one

A horizontal agent competes with every well-funded platform and has to be configured by every customer. A vertical agent arrives already knowing what a lien waiver is, and closes faster because the buyer does not have to explain their own business to you.

Narrow also compounds in ways broad does not. The same integrations recur, the same objections recur, and the same edge cases recur. By the fifth customer in one niche your build time has dropped substantially. By the fifth customer across five industries it has not moved at all, because nothing you learned transferred.

The fear is that the niche is too small. In practice a job done weekly by a thousand companies at a few hundred a month is a real business, and it is a business nobody with a large sales team will bother to fight you for until you are much bigger.

The five signals that matter

Frequency: the job happens at least weekly. Annual jobs cannot build a habit, cannot show a trend, and give you one chance a year to prove value. Weekly jobs let the agent become part of how work happens.

Cost of the status quo: someone is spending real money or real risk on this today, in salary, in outsourcing, or in the price of getting it wrong. If you cannot find the money currently being spent, there is no budget line for you to move into.

Access: you can get five conversations in the next seven days. Not eventually, this week. Data reality: the inputs exist in a form software can read, and someone will actually give them to you. Finally, a failed prior attempt - they hired someone, bought a tool, or built a spreadsheet. That failure is proof of both pain and budget.
